Kabuki Theatre

Kabuki theater became very popular with people of all classes but especially the merchant class. It featured lively action, wild plots, and elaborative plots and makeup. It mirrored the Japanese life and it often focused on domestic dramas that showed moral dilemmas such as the conflict between sadness and happiness.

The first kabuki was performed in 1607 by a woman named Okami. The Bakufu believed that the public mortality was being corrupted by the female actresses and in 1629, banned all females from the stage. From then on, the kabuki was played by men.

Kabuki was only played by the eta.
