When and why did Japan isolate itself?

At the beginning of the Edo period, Japan was actively trading with many countries. Soon, European ships arrived in Japan and Tokugawa Ieyasu did not like that. He did not want the people of Japan exposed to the ideas and the culture of the European people. He was also concerned because he saw the Europeans establishing colonies in many areas that they explored. That is why Japan was under isolation from 1623-1631.
