Bakufu, Daimyo(edicts)

Bakufu is the centralized military government headed by the shogun.
Daimyo is a feudal lord of a region in Japan.
After Japan was isolated, the Bakufu introduced a series of edicts(legal order; a command to the public by an authority). They called the edicts The National Seclusion Policy and it was an effort by the Bakufu to strengthen its authority and maintain a strong centralized government.
The National Seclusion Policy developed over six years from 1633 to 1639. It set out interactions between people of Japan and foreigners. The list included the terms written below:
  • Japanese ships are strictly forbidden to travel to foreign countries.
  • No Japanese is permitted to go abroad. Anyone who attempts to do so must be executed.
  • If any Japanese returns from oversea after residing there, he must be put to death.
  • If any Westerners teach Christianity or commit crimes, they may be put into prisons.
  • No single trading city shall be permitted to purchase all the merchandise brought by foreign ships.
  • Portuguese ships are banned from Japanese ports. Any ship disobeying this order will be destroyed and its crew and passengers executed.
